People often make wrong decisions. They move impulsively, do not think about the conse-quences and sometimes find themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time. Then they regret and start all over again making the same mistakes. Some have the courage to begin a new life from a clean sheet, while others never let go of the past and create non-existent illusions in the hope of a beter life.
Giorgi Varsimashvili's feature film "Unfulfilled Dream" (2010) is a story of unrealized love. The plot seems to be trivial. A boy is hopelessly in love with a girl, Ani. Ani has a boyfriend and lives with him. The boy is the third in their relationship. He spends a lot of time at the girl's window. He calls and she answers and this answer raises the hope that someday there will be something more than this action. Who is to blame? Both. The boy because he does not leave Ani and thinks that he will be with her in the future, and Ani because she gives him hopes. On the one hand, the boy seems to be a thorn in the relationship between Ani and her boyfriend and on the other hand, a plan "B" for Ani. There is a feeling that Ani is taking a step back in life and that's why she doesn't remove the boy from her area.
The story line is built entirely on the principle of the game. Each of them is either playing with fate or playing with themselves. They do not take emotions seriously. Ani plays with the boy's feelings, the boy plays with life and loses. They are individually lonely people and do not have each other for comfort.
Nothing is known about the girl, who is probably not happy with her boyfriend. The plot is so simple and superficial that no questions arise. The story of the acquaintance of the boy and Ani starts from the first year at university. He chased the girl in the underground station and got to know her. It is possible that Ani considers the boy to be a normal psychopath, a person who followed the girl, got to know her, and will not let go of her even after a few years. He follows her, calls her, asks for a date.
The boy's name is unknown in the film. Whether this is good or bad is debatable. Good, proba-bly because he is a generalized individual, in which all those people are meant who have taken wrong steps in life or delayed making decisions.
This film, like everything else, has the other side. On the one hand, it is a story about the great desire for love and on the other hand, about obsession. It is also possible that the boy does not love Ani and is simply obsessed. He calls only because he wonders what will come out of this situation and he cannot tolerate the fact that the girl is not with him. If Ani loved him too, then there was a good chance she would lose interest and find another girl. Guys are often attracted to unavailable women. With this action, this film is similar to Levan Tutberidze's film "I'll Die Without You." There, the writer, Zaza is in love with his brother's girlfriend, and when he receives similar impulses from her, it seems that the feelings disappear and he starts looking for a new person.
"Unfulfilled Dream" is not distinguished by a variety of colors either. Everything is shot in one standard, mediocre style. The frames are connected to each other and, as if, one complete story line is shown. There is no information about any of the characters. There are only a few actors. A photographer who lives in a studio and probably has contacts abroad. A boy who is stuck in chaos and doesn't try to meet another girl, and there is Ani. The girl who clearly does not have a happy life. Everything just revolves around these three. Without spreading the information but in a compact way.
A boy walking down the street not in a sober state, hallucinates what he probably wanted to happen all his life. I wonder if they had any relationship before – if they liked each other or not. Everything is so real for the boy that he doesn't understand where the line is between the dream and the real world. Actions are organized as he wants. Ani goes to his home with him. A boy pours wine into two glasses placed nearby. Then they drink, the girl kisses, and when the boy thinks that this will continue, she slaps on his face. The pal wakes up the boy who has fall-en on the street, brings him to his senses, and this fulfilled wish of the latter also disappears somewhere. The photographer pal is taking the boy home, and when they cross the street, they go past Ani, who is sitting outside the bar with tears in her eyes, smoking a cigarette. It does not matter what happened next. The fact is that the boy did not catch a moment, made a wrong decision and missed the chance to fulfill his wish.
It would have been a good plot move by the director to repeat the action several times until the boy and Ani meet. The plot of the film is partly similar to Gil Junger's drama "If Only" (2004), in which a boy has a chance to fix everything, and the actions are repeated until he figures it all out.
It is interesting, the boy might be asleep even at the beginning of the film and had to wake up again. Sometimes a dream is so attractive that people don't want to wake up. Why is his dream unfulfilled, has he ever tried to realize it? Did he ask Ani questions and did they like each other in the past? Why can't they get away from each other? They say that if you can't forget a per-son, they won't let you go either. Ani might have also wanted to have a relationship with the boy and didn't really like the one she was living with. They missed each other with exactly one action.
"Unfulfilled Dream" is another example of the fact that in many cases people cannot accept rejection and do not know the meaning of the word – no. They cannot adapt to the fact that something may simply not happen or that the moment may be missed. A mirage is often an illusion and has nothing to do with reality.
Often a short film does not allow to finish the thought. The director is obliged to cut down what he has to say so that it fits into the standard of such a film. This might have happened to Giorgi Varsimashvili as well. He had a lot to say, and when he cut some parts out of the script, he ended up with an emotionless, usual plot that's so simple that anyone can shoot it. Films ex-ist to raise the audience questions and make them think about it for a long time.
What is the film about? About a bored guy who wants to start a relationship with a girl he met at university, but nothing works out. In the end, he tries to escape from reality, and in this at-tempt, he loses perhaps his only chance to be with Ani.
What would have happened if everything went differently? If they had met each other, talked and were sure about their emotions. They may even meet in someone's imagination.
